Beets wins Tasmanian Volunteer award

Mel Beets was named as the winner of the Sport, Recreation and Service Groups Volunteer Award.
Esteemed Tasmanian official Melanie Beets has added another accolade to her name after being named as the winner of the Sport, Recreation and Service Groups Volunteer Award for 2023 Tasmanian Volunteering Awards.

The Awards celebrate the state's volunteers and their contributions to communities across Tasmania, with Beets was one of three individuals nominated for her specific award.

Having been involved in the sport for many years, Beets was successful in receiving the away due to many licenses and qualifications and her exceptional management, communication, and delegation skills as a Clerk of Course.

Also, an active member of the Hobart Sporting Car Club, Beets has served as a club secretary and state council delegate was named as the 2022 Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Official of the Year earlier this year.

So dedicated to the sport, Beets missed the official presentation at Government House due to her commitment to Supercars and the Ned Whisky Tasmania Supersprint, only to find out about her win the day after.

“It’s a good reward for a lot of hard work and it’s always nice to be acknowledged,” Beets said.

“Honestly, the nomination was a bigger surprise than actually winning, but it’s nice to be recognised by people outside the sport, especially for the efforts that I, along with every other official, do on a weekly basis.

“I don't do this for awards but I am quite happy to have won an award twice this year and I was quite chuffed to have seen my name in the paper the next day – it gave me a big smile.

“I would like to thank Daniel from Motorsport Australia for the nomination, as well as the Hobart Sporting Car Club for being supportive of me and allow me to push fairly hard as an official.”
