The fourth round of the Motorsport Australia New South Wales Supersprint Championship has seen a number of class records broken throughout the day.

Held at Sydney Motorsport Park, more than 80 cars were entered in the event as they all raced against the clock trying to post the fastest lap of the Eastern Creek circuit.

Taking out the outright victory was Australian Racing Drivers Club member Richard Perini, who steered his Ginetta G55 to a remarkable time of 1:30.6061 on his sixth lap.

The lap saw him almost five seconds faster than anyone else, with Mitsubishi Evo driver Damon Ashton the next best placed driver with his fastest time of 1:35.0942 earning him a runner-up finish over Brian Bugh, who was a further one second off.

Both Ashton and Bugh led the string of 10 drivers to have left the event with a new record with the latter breaking the eight-year Type TA class record by 1.7 seconds, while Bush topped his own TA3 record set six years ago by 2.3 seconds.

The duo weren’t the only two drivers inside the outright top 10 to claim a new record with the sixth placed John Nguyen and seventh placed Rex Yu both coming away with new lap records.

While Nguyen managed to pip Yu by just three tenths of a second for sixth place outright, it was a much bigger gap for his record-breaking lap, which saw him guide his BMW M2 to the Class 3R4 record.

Yu also set a new benchmark time in style, topping the previous CLASS RM4 in his Toyota GR Supra by almost three seconds.

Rounding out the top 10 were another two record setters with Robert Kolimackovski finishing ninth overall and picking up the fastest TA1 Class time by just over a second and Lahlan Han, who beat the previous Class 2R4 time by two seconds.

The final record breaking time was the biggest with Nigel Moore steering his Ford Mustang Mach 1 to a time of 1.47.046, which was almost four and half seconds better than the previous time set by Bill Vouden last year. faster than the Class RR4 by four seconds.

Motorsport Australia NSW Supersprint Panel Chair Ian Williams was surprised at how many records were broken throughout the day but was proud of all the drivers who did so.

“It was a brilliant day with the 83 competitors all producing good laps around the circuit,” Williams said.

“It was quite unusual to have so many records broken in one day but it was a nice cool, sunny day, so the denser air probably aided engine power which contributed to the unusually high number.

“The championship is in a really good place at the moment and part of that is because many of these competitors continue to improve, which is great.”
