Motorsport Australia development programs kick off in style

Tuesday 22 March, 2022
It was a busy weekend in Victoria for both the FIA Girls on Track and Ricciardo Racers programs, with each holding their first events for the year.

Taking place at the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Phillip Island, 60 girls from Newhaven College, Glen Waverly Secondary College, St. Joseph's Crib Point Primary School and Our lady Star of the Sea Cowes all got to enjoy an insight into motorsport through the FIA Girls on Track program.

A number of FIA Girls on Track Ambassadors were in attendance at the event, including Shannen Kiely, Nadine Armstrong, Jessica Dane, and Romy Mayer, as well as Champions Belinda Riseley and Karina Vasudevan.

Each ambassador was in charge of running the regular activities throughout the day including the pit stop and reaction challenges and the media and STEM workshops.

In addition to the activities, the girls were also treated to a tour of the Triple Eight Race Engineering garage, led by Dane, as well as the garages of other drivers competing in the weekend such as Lachlan Dalton and Madeline Stewart.

The program’s busy schedule continues this weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park, before visits to Canberra for the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship season opener early next month and the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix Girls on Track edition will run slightly differently to previous events with a focus on career development and mentoring.

As for Ricciardo’s Racers, 30 girls and boys aged between 12-17 attended METEC in Bayswater on Sunday, learning the basics of motorsport through a range of driving techniques.

The intention of Ricciardo’s Racers is to prepare the next generation of motorsport talent and highlight the pathways to compete at grassroots motorsport.

For this first event of the year, experienced drivers Courtney Prince and Chelsea Angelo were tasked with guiding the 30 participants through a number of exercises behind the wheel and in a safe environment.

The next Ricciardo’s Racers event will be at Sydney Motorsport Park on the evening of Thursday, 28 April.
