It’s been more than 12 months since the Motorsport Australia Victorian State Circuit Championships was able to run and finally, its long awaited return occurs this weekend at Sandown Raceway.

With such a long wait between events, the MG Car Club of Victoria hosted round will welcome one of its biggest entry lists in history with more than 300 competitors to race across 12 categories.

The categories to feature over the weekend will be all the regulars in Sports Cars, HQ Holdens, Formula Fords, Sports Sedans, Historic Touring Cars, Improved Production, Saloon Cars, MG and Invited British Sports Cars, the 944 Challenge, Formula Vee, Hyundai Excels and BMW E30s.

Adding to the excitement surrounding the event will be the ability for spectators to attend.

Fans will have access to the event, but only through the famous Red Hill area to accommodate social distancing requirements. Adult tickets cost $15, while children have free admission but still need to register with the club for contact tracing purposes.

One of the headline acts for this highly anticipated weekend will be the 40-minute Sports Cars endurance race where an eclectic mix of exotic cars such as McLarens, Lamborghinis, Porsches and Audis will put on a show for the attending spectators.

Both the Excels and the Improved Production grids are at full capacity with more than 40 entries involved in both, while another 30-cars make up the impressive Sports Sedans Cars field.

With both competitor and spectator numbers surpassing the club’s expectations, Clerk of Course David Vernon was extremely excited for the weekend.

“We were very nervous when the snap lockdown happened because there was so much uncertainty about what the restrictions would be when we eventually come out of the lockdown,” Vernon said.

“However obviously everything is back to normal in a way and we couldn’t be happier with the current situation. We’re just over the moon we can run this weekend.

“We’re also really thrilled with the amount of entries we have received. To have 300 plus post-COVID is just fantastic. It’s not a record number but it’s close and it’s the first time in a very long time we have had more than 300 entries for a state round.

“Obviously it’s only Red Hill that’s open to the public, but it’s a start and we have already sold 110 tickets, which is terrific. Traditionally we don’t get a very big gate, even at the best of times, so we’re extremely happy to have the amount that we do.

“I think everyone is just excited to be back and I have no doubt it’s going to be a fantastic weekend.”

The first round of the Motorsport Australia Victorian State Circuit Championships takes place at Sandown Raceway on 20-21 February.
