The Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship returns to action this weekend with 88 entrants across seven categories to compete at Symmons Plains Raceway.

It’s been almost six months since the championship held its first round at Baskerville earlier this year, however with the next round of the championship just days away, there is a lot of excitement brewing amongst competitors.

So much so that the season’s first meeting at Symmons Plains has attracted more competitors than usual.

Hosted by the MG Car Club of Tasmania, event secretary Bronwyn Zuber believes people’s desire to go racing again was the main catalyst behind the mass entry.

“We don’t usually get this many people to a Symmons Plains round, so to have 88 entered across a range of categories is really good,” Zuber said.

“There hasn’t been any racing for so long, so more people came this time round because they’re excited. Whether they like Symmons or not, they just want to race again and we welcome that attitude.”

Competitors and officials were understandably thrilled to finally get the opportunity to attend a race meeting again and Zuber admits organising an event in the current climate has involved some extra challenges, but none that couldn’t be overcome.

“I think it will be great to see people. We don’t regularly have meetings like this and six months is a long time between rounds, so we’re looking forward to reuniting with everyone again,” Zuber added.

“That said, this weekend has been a bit of challenge to organise because not only have we not done it in a while and we’re a little rusty, but there are a lot of things to take into account this time round due to the Coronavirus.

“We have to be a strict with everything, but it’s for the greater good and we just want to make sure everything is safe. We need to be on our toes and we have both the Government rulings and Motorsport Australia’s Return to Race document to help us.

“I hope everything goes well and it’s not too cold. We don’t expect anything to go wrong as we very rarely have any major incidents occur, so we’re pretty excited to be back.”

While numbers are a primary focus in the club’s COVID plan, fortunately, spectators will be allowed to attend the second round of the 2020 championship with up to 500 tickets available at the gate.

Competitors will also be allowed to have three pit crew members, however each attendee in the pits will need to officially sign on and display their pass at all times.

With each of the seven categories getting four races on Sunday, competitors can take part in a private practice session at the track tomorrow to get some extra seat time.

The Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship’s second round takes place at Symmons Plains Raceway on Sunday 23 August.
