Four more rounds for GT in 2020

Monday 29 June, 2020
The Motorsport Australia GT Championship will have four rounds in 2020.
The Motorsport Australia GT Championship has announced its new 2020 calendar with four more events to make up the revised season.

The championship will spend the first half of the season in the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships with rounds at Sydney Motorsport Park in August and Sandown Raceway in September.

Competitors will then join the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship as a support category, contesting its final two rounds at October’s iconic Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and the Pirtek Perth Supersprint at Barbagallo Raceway over the final weekend of October.

With two 60-minute races to make up the round’s race format, category rights holder Jim Manolios was looking forward to getting the Championship up and running for 2020.

“We’re pleased to be able to confirm three additional dates to Sydney Motorsport Park,” Manolios said.

“Sandown, Bathurst and Perth will see a four-round season, however we are looking at options to add a fifth event, with a number of possible venues being canvassed, however we wanted to lock away what we had and consensus is, we have a strong program.

“To achieve what our team has done so far and maintain our preferred venues and race lengths is great, but we will continue the discussion with all the stakeholders with respect to adding another round, but for now, we have a great program to work with.”

While the dates for the revised calendar have been announced, Manolios admitted the calendar wasn’t set in stone, as it is dependent on State and Federal Government directives and restrictions relating to COVID-19.

“Things are still in a state of flux at this stage, however we’re hoping that by September we’ll have a better indication of what will happen in South Australia and Western Australia,” Manolios added.

“That said, we won’t be alone if those border closures remain in place, but regardless, at no stage will we risk the health of our teams over the potential to be racing again - we’re all keen to get trackside, but only when it is safe to do so.”

The 2020 Motorsport Australia GT Championship begins as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on 14-16 August.
