Latkovski second in GT shootout

Monday 17 February, 2020
Cody Nikola Latkovski has fallen just short of another major title.
Australian Cody Nikola Latkovski has finished as a runner-up in the 2020 FIA Gran Turismo Champions World Tour in Sydney, falling milliseconds short of Japan’s Takuma Miyazono in an epic final race.

Fresh off a Digital Cup gold medal at the inaugural FIA Motorsport Games in November last year, Latkovski was one of four Australians competing in the international event made up 24 drivers and the teenager was strong across the whole day.

Right from the get-go, Latkovski was one of the top players of the competition, qualifying in third place outright before finishing second in his semi-final, losing only to Hong Kong based Jonathan Wong.

With just 12 drivers racing in the Grand Final, Latkovski found himself in a tight battle for first place against Miyazono after passing Wong earlier in the race.

The two frontrunners put on a masterclass throughout the remainder of the final, but it wasn’t to be for Latkovski as the Japanese driver edged him out by just three hundredths of a second on the final straight– making it one of the closest GT final races in recent times, while Wong rounded out the podium five seconds later.

The only other Australian to reach the Grand Final event was Matt Simmons and it proved to be a tough race as he finished in 12th place. Despite not placing strong in the final, it was a fantastic effort for Simmons as he just squeezed into the semi-final.

After qualifying in the top 10, Adam Wilk was unable to replicate his efforts in the semi-final, finishing 11th in his semi-final.
